Reflections on the 75th anniversary of Germany’s Basic Law: Lessons and Legacies for Today
A Virtual Discussion with Russell A. Miller

In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany ratified the Grundgesetz, or Basic Law, which established protections for fundamental human rights and the recognition of human dignity in the wake of the Nazi regime. Over the past 75 years, the Basic Law has provided a foundation for a flourishing and resilient democracy in Germany. At the same time, the past eight decades have also raised new questions about protections for various individual and societal rights. How have these been dealt with? This discussion will consider the lessons and legacies of the Basic Law. We are pleased to welcome law professor Russell A. Miller, author of the new text Introduction to German Law and Legal Culture (Cambridge University Press, 2024) in conversation with Dr. Jackson Janes, Senior Fellow at the German Marshall Fund of the US.

This virtual event will take place on Tuesday, May 14 at 9.00 AM PDT | 12.00 EDT | 18.00 MEZ. Please register in advance using the link below:
