We are pleased to welcome distinguished University of Freiburg alumni and partners to the first annual dinner since the coronavirus pandemic. Speakers will include:

ABOUT THE SPEAKERS

Consul General David Gill: Born in 1966, Gill grew up in a protestant minister’s family in Herrnhut, Saxony, in former East Germany. He was denied a higher education by the communist regime for political reasons. Instead, he trained and worked as a plumber before joining a preparatory protestant school and later the theological seminary of the Protestant Church in Berlin-Brandenburg. In 1990, he initially was the chairman of Normannenstrasse Citizens’ Committee which oversaw the dissolution of the Ministry of State Security at the Stasi headquarters and served as the secretary of the Special Committee for the dissolution of the Stasi of the East German Parliament. After reunification, Gill became spokesman and head of the research division of the Federal Commissioner for the Stasi-Files before studying law in Berlin and Philadelphia. After holding positions in the Federal Ministry of the Interior and at the Commissioner for Data Protection and Freedom of Information in Berlin, he served as the Deputy Representative of the Council of the Protestant Church in Germany to the Federal Republic of Germany and the European Union. During Federal President Joachim Gauck’s term from 2012-2017, he was state secretary and chief of staff of the President. Since August 2017, he has been the German Consul General in New York.

Rector Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein: On October 1, 2020, the first female rector in the history of the University of Freiburg took office. Prof. Dr. Kerstin Krieglstein was previously Rector of the University of Constance from 2018-2020. She studied chemistry and pharmacy, received her doctorate in pharmacology from the University of Marburg in 1990, and habilitated in anatomy and cell biology at the University of Heidelberg in 1997. After professorships at the University of Göttingen and the University of Saarland, she accepted a professorship in anatomy at the University of Freiburg in 2007. In 2013, the Medical Faculty elected her as its first full-time dean. She held this office from April 1, 2014 until her move to Constance, and was thus also a member of the board of the University Hospital of Freiburg. In addition, she has been a member of the Leopoldina – National Academy of Sciences since 2007.

Prof. Dr. Ralf von den Hoff is Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Freiburg. In 1992, he received his PhD from Bonn University. In 1999/2000 he was Visiting Assistant Professor at the Department of Classics at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, as a fellow of the Alexander-von-Humboldt-Foundation. Since 2012 he has been speaker of the Collaborative Research Center 948 ‘Heroes, Herizations, Heroisms’, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Between 2012 and 2014 he was FRIAS Research Fellow at the School of History. In 2018/19 he was member of the FRIAS Project Group ‘SurFace. Image-Artifact-Relations’. In 2018/19 and 2020 he was fellow at the Morphomata International Center for Advanced Studies, University of Cologne. He is member of the Frankreichzentrum of Freiburg University, of the Collegium Beatus Rhenanus and of the German Archaeological Institute. Since 2021 has been member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities. His research focuses on Greek sculpture, ancient portraits and the representation of rulers as well as on the iconology and visual culture of the ancient Greek and Roman world. Ralf von den Hoff served as Dean of Studies and as Vice Dean of the Philosophical Faculty of Freiburg University from 2006 until 2012. Between 2009 and 2019, he was a member of the Executive Committee of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI). Between 2012 and 2020, he was a member of the DFG Review Board ‘Ancient Cultures’, and between 2013 and 2020 a member of the Scientific Commission of the Union of German Academies of Sciences and Humanities. From 2015 until 2018 he served as a member of the FRIAS Steering Commitee. He is a co-editor of the online journal ‘Göttinger Forum für Altertumswissenschaft’ (GFA) and a member of the Editorial Board of the’Bulletin de Correspondance Hellénique’ and of the Scientific Advisory Board of the’Istanbuler Mitteilungen’ and the ‘Römische Mitteilungen’, published by the German Archaeological Institute. In October 2022, Ralf von den Hoff was appointed Executive Director of FRIAS.
