Virtual Introduction: Thursday, March 16 – 7pm ET
HD Broadcast of Met Live Performance: Saturday, March 18
Sarah Stephens, Friends of Freiburg Board member and President of Stephens Nicolson Artists Management, will offer a virtual introduction on Thursday, March 16, in advance of the Met’s performance and live HD broadcast on Saturday, March 18. Sarah adapts her introductions to first-time opera audiences. She will help you understand the complexities of Wagner’s controversial history as well as the beauty and universal themes of his music and stories.
Wagner’s soaring masterpiece makes its triumphant return to the Met stage after 17 years. In a sequel to his revelatory production of Parsifal, director François Girard unveils an atmospheric staging that once again weds his striking visual style and keen dramatic insight to Wagner’s breathtaking music, with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to conduct a supreme cast led by tenor Piotr Beczała in the title role of the mysterious swan knight. Soprano Tamara Wilson is the virtuous duchess Elsa, falsely accused of murder, going head-to-head with soprano Christine Goerke as the cunning sorceress Ortrud, who seeks to lay her low. Bass-baritone Evgeny Nikitin is Ortrud’s power-hungry husband, Telramund, and bass Günther Groissböck is King Heinrich.
This live cinema transmission is part of the Met’s award-winning Live in HD series, bringing opera to movie theaters across the globe.
Please join us with a bowl of popcorn or a glass of wine for Sarah’s opera introduction with Friends of Freiburg that will enhance your understanding and enjoyment of the opera. This event will be held as a Zoom meeting, so audience members can engage and ask questions if desired — but it is not required to turn on your camera.
Our opera introductions correspond with the weekend Live in HD stream of the production. Check the schedule at your local cinema for Saturday streams of the performance in a town near you by clicking here and following the link to “Find Your Theater.”
